Travelling by car to Faro and Loulé

We hired a car to drive through the surrounding areas for a bit. We chose Faro as the main destination, but on the way back we spontaneously stopped off at Loulé.

Faro is the administrative centre of the Algarve and the largest city in the region. The port of the city is protected by a lagoon, which today is a national park. Faro is one of the most famous cities in Portugal. Many travellers land on an airfield about 3 km west of the city and explore the coastal region from here.

In the old town of Faro, you can find some beautiful historical buildings from the 16th and 18th century. What we enjoyed even more, however, were the narrow streets, tiled houses and the small shops as a beautiful opportunity for shopping.

After an extensive city tour, we drove inland and stopped off at Loulé. Impressive fortress walls from the 13th century can be found here, from which you have a superb view of the roofs of the city.

Markthallen Faro

We were especially impressed by the market hall. Built in Moorish inspired style it has become a landmark of the city. It is fun to discover regional food and to taste some of the typical sweets. A long and wonderful day of exploring! Unfortunately, also the conclusion of our holiday on the coast of the Algarve.
