A rental car is definitely worth the money on a trip to Lanzarote. It gives you the flexibility to explore places in your own time and seek out spots that are less busy.
We, for example, went to Castillo Santa Bárbara. At first, our tour took us to Mirador del Rio. A former fortress in Lanzarote’s north that has now been transformed into a viewpoint.
Those who would like to save the money for the entrance fee simply walk down the road a couple of metres. The view from there is just as good!
From over 400 metres above sea level, one gets to see some old salt fields and the island La Graciosa from above.
We continued our tour through the world of lava rocks that is Lanzarote. Our goal was further inland near Teguise. The small but bulky Castillo Santa Bárbara is visible from afar. It is situated in the volcano Guanapay. A road, laid down especially for this purpose, leads up to the premises.
The fort was built to protect the locals against pirates and has been a shelter for many people. Today, the fort is a museum. The trip to the museum in the Castillo Santa Bárbara was important to us. We wanted to come here for the great views over the areas further inland. And it was worth it!
